The Queen / La Reina
I’ve seen Leibovitz’s work twice. First at the Brooklyn Museum in NY. The portraits of the Queen of England were not part of the exhibit.
At that time I thought her work was interesting from the intimacy point of view. She has a lot of access to her subjects and she was able to photograph them in their most personal moments.
I remember a couple of jaw-dropping pictures but after seeing more than 200 pictures I retain just a few of them in my mind. I had mixed feelings about her photographs.
This year I had the opportunity to see her work again at the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris.
The Queen was there now to receive me and I was humbled by her presence. Not the Queen of England’s but Leibovitz’s. The photographs were stunning. The quality, the lighting, the composition, the mood. Everything about the Queen’s photo shoot was perfect.
That is not what touched me the most that day.
I don’t remember who said once that the other half of the photo is what the spectator puts in the picture while looking at it. Incredibly true for me at that moment.
In the same room where the now the controversial shots of the Queen hung on the wall, a silent and very special area was dedicated to Leibovitz’s pictures of her beloved friend Susan Sontag during her last days alive. I got very emotional. They really stroke me deeply. At this moment everything I thought about her work being just the result of her access to important people dissapeared.
“Most people don’t like to be photographed,” - she said refering to the Queen’s photo shoot. That just made her work worthwhile even if some of her pictures are weak to me.
You can have all the access you want to weird, difficult and important people or places but if you don’t have something to say and if you don’t let your heart say it with it’s own clicks then you are not taking photography seriously and it will show.

He visto el trabajo de Leiboviz dos veces. La primera en el Museo de Brooklyn en NY. Los retratos de la Reina de Inglaterra no estaban en la exposición.
En ese momento su trabajo me pareció interesante desde el punto de vista de la intimidad. Ella tiene un gran acceso a sus sujetos y es capas de fotografiarlos en sus momentos mas personales.
Recuerdo un par de fotos impresionantes pero después de ver más de 200 imágenes, recuerdo solo un puñado de ellas en mi cabeza. Tenía sentimientos encontrados sobre su fotografía.
Este año tuve la oportunidad de ver su trabajo nuevamente en la Maison Européenne de la Photographie en Paris.
La reina estaba ahora ahí para recibirme y yo me sentí sobrecogido por su presencia. No me refiero a la Reina de Inglaterra sino a Leibovitz. Las fotografías eran fantásticas. La calidad, la iluminación, la composición, el ambiente. Todo en las tomas de la Reina es perfecto.
Eso no fue lo que más me impactó ese día.
No recuerdo quién dijo alguna vez que la otra mitad de la fotografía es lo que el espectador le pone cuando la ve. Increiblemente cierto para mi en ese momento.
En el mismo cuarto donde las ahora controversiales fotos de la Reina colgaban en la pared, un área callada y muy especial era dedicada a las fotos que Leibovitz tomó de su amada amiga Susan Sontag en sus últimos días de vida. Me revolví por dentro. Me tocaron profundamente. En ese momento desapareció todo lo que pensaba mi prejuicio de que el peso de su trabajo residía solo en el acceso a la gente importante.
“A la mayoría de la gente no le gusta ser fotografiada” - dijo refiriéndose a la sesión de fotos con la reina. Eso hizo que las fotos cobraran sentido aunque algunas me parezcan un poco flojas.
Puedes tener todo el acceso que quieras a gente o sitios raros, difíciles o importantes pero si no tienes nada que decir y si no dejas que el corazón lo haga con sus propios clicks entonces no estás tomando la fotografía en serio y se notará.

Pepsi introduces it’s new logo and packaging. I think politics when I see it.
I like the fact that it is simpler, but, the typography is horrible and it is sideways. The size and shape of the white strip changes depending on the flavor meaning there is no single logo to associate the brand with.

Me gusta el hecho que es más simple, pero, la tipografía es horrible y además está de lado. El tamaño del logo cambia dependiendo del sabor de la Pepsi por ende no hay un solo logo para la marca.
